South Pryor's residential streets filled in largely after the war with ranch houses and cottages, many gaining carports and additions over the years. If your house is one of them, its roof probably isn't one roof; it's a main roof with a carport, garage or porch section attached, and those joints are where the interesting questions live.
A ranch house is long, low and mostly roof when you look at it from the street, and its shallow slopes shed water more slowly than steep ones. The additions that make these houses practical, the carport over the driveway, the garage tied in later, the covered patio, each add a roof section with its own slope and its own connection to the main house.
None of that is a problem by itself. Plenty of south-side roofs are in fine shape, and a house's era says nothing certain about the covering on it today. What the layout does mean is that a proper look at one of these roofs covers every section and every joint between them, not just the biggest slope.
Where an attached section meets the house, three things have to be right, and any of them can quietly go wrong.
Shingles need a minimum pitch to shed water reliably. A carport or patio roof built flatter than that needs a covering meant for low slopes; ordinary shingles laid on a too-shallow section let slow-moving water find the nail holes.
Where the lower roof meets the house wall, flashing carries water past the joint. It's the hardest-working detail on the whole roof, and when it opens up, the leak often shows inside near the connection, blamed on whichever roof is handy.
Everything the main roof sheds onto an attached section has to travel across it and leave. That concentrated flow ages the lower section faster, which is why a carport roof can be tired while the main roof is fine.
Long, low eaves are the ranch signature, and they put a lot of roof edge close to the ground, where gutters do the last leg of the water's trip. On a shallow-sloped roof that edge works harder: water arrives slower and lingers longer, so a clogged or badly pitched gutter backs water up toward the shingle edge instead of merely overflowing.
